The Amazing History of Cocoa Beach Pier 🌊🏄‍♂️

🌴 Cocoa Beach Pier is a beloved spot for both Florida locals and tourists, standing as a testament to the unforgettable beach culture of Cocoa Beach, FL.

Cocoa Beach Pier: A Space Coast Landmark 🚀

Built in 1962 by local businessman Richard Stottler, Cocoa Beach Pier, originally known as “Canaveral Pier," is a historic gem on Florida’s Space Coast. Constructed with over 2.5 miles of boardwalk planks and 270 pilings, it stretches 800 feet into the Atlantic Ocean, offering stunning views. 🌅

Back in the day, locals would drive their cars right onto the Pier for a unique perspective on Mercury, Apollo, and Space Shuttle launches from nearby Cape Canaveral. Even famous astronauts like Alan Shepard, the first American in space, have walked these planks! 🌟

No matter the season, the Pier remains a top destination for both locals and tourists.

Surfing Capital of the East Coast 🏄‍♀️

As Cocoa Beach evolved into the “Surfing Capital of the East Coast,” the Pier became a hub for surfing activities, attracting legends like Dick Catri, the “Godfather of East Coast Surfing,” and Cocoa Beach native, 11-time world champion Kelly Slater. 🌊🏆

The first Easter Surfing Festival took place here in 1964, marking the Pier as a surfing mecca. One of the original Ron Jon Surf Shops opened on the Pier in 1963, later moving to accommodate the growing crowds. 🏄‍♂️

The early 1970s saw the Pier's dance club, Asylum, light up with live music. Legendary acts like Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Beach Boys, UB40, and Ziggy Marley have graced the Pier’s stage. 🎸🎤

In 1983, a $2 million renovation gave the Pier a new look, and in 1984, it was renamed Cocoa Beach Pier. Today, it draws over a million visitors annually, featuring three restaurants, two tropical bars, gift shops, and boutiques. It’s also a hotspot for surfing, fundraisers, and social events. 🌺🍹
